On Tuesday 22nd March, the Year 8 Girl travelled to Kings School to participate in the Chester & District Netball Tournament.
The weather was stunning, almost like an Aussie Summer’s day- so Mrs Storrar knew it was going to be a good afternoon!
The girls played exceptionally well in all their matches and managed to win all of their games in their pool apart from in the Christleton match, where they were defeated 6 -4.
As runners up in their pool, the girls then played the home team, Kings School and beat them 4 – 2! Winning their semi-final meant they went on to play in the final, where once again they had to take on Christleton!
Unfortunately Christleton had some very tall girls and remarkable shooters, defeating Abbey Gate for the second time in the afternoon, with an even more convincing win of 8 goals -2.
A fantastic effort by all the Year 8 girls to be crowned Runners Up of the Tournament!
A special mention to Charlotte Williamson and Ellie Parker- the team’s captains who have kept the team’s spirits high throughout the season!

On the 15th March, the Year 7 team played in an Invitational Netball Tournament at Brine Leas in Nantwich. The first game, a friendly against St Thomas Moore was an easy 9- nil win to Abbey Gate. Next was Queens, a difficult but close match with Queens scoring 4 goals to Abbey Gate’s 2. The third game against Christleton was a close one, but the girls managed to keep up with their opponents and at the final whistle, finished the game with a lead of one point. (Final Score: 4 – 3 to AGC). Game four against Malbank’s A team was an easy defeat with Abbey Gate scoring 5 goals to nil and the last game of the preliminary pool, against Brine Leas A team, was another win for Abbey Gate 5-2.
The girls finished their pool in First place and qualified for the Semi-finals. They played Kings Grove, winning the game with 4-2!
Having won the Semi-final, Abbey Gate qualified for the Final, but so did The Queens School. Having played them in the preliminary rounds, the girls knew it would be a difficult match. Abbey Gate couldn’t quite keep up with the Queens girls who won the Final and the tournament convincingly, but put Abbey Gate in second place overall- a top effort girls!
The girls played in yet another tournament last week, this time- the Chester & Districts held at Bishops Bluecoat.
The competition was again very fierce, but the girls managed to win all their games in the preliminary round, except the extremely close game against Kings, where they drew the game 1-all, after a long and tiring14 minutes play. As Kings had also won all their games, the points were even at the end of the round. First the goal difference was considered, where both Kings and Abbey Gate had exactly the same score! Then goals scored for each team were taken, and luckily Abbey Gate won on goals scored- well done shooters!!
Having won their pool, Abbey Gate then played the home team- Bishops Bluecoat. An incredibly feisty but evenly matched game saw the scores even at the final whistle. 2 minutes extra time was played but unfortunately Bishops had the next centre- which makes a big difference in netball! The Abbey Gate girls hung on and fought hard but, Bishops managed to score within the 2 minutes of extra time.....
Bishops went on to play in the final against Queens, who were once again declared winners of the tournament!
A fantastic effort and great success for our Year 7 Netball Team, coming runners up in their first tournament and then third in Chester & District. The girls’ achievements this year in netball is not only down to raw talent, but hard work at training sessions in school and gaining invaluable experience from playing at club level.

On the 12th of October we went to Cransley to play netball. When we arrived, we started with a light warm up. Then we started our game which unusually, we played in three 3rds. For the first 5 minutes we were leading 2-0, however Cransley pulled it back to win the first third 5-2. We agreed on some team tactics and were a lot stonger in the second 3rd, but Cransley scored two goals to take the lead 7-2. Our team shone in the final 3rd, as we worked well together and supported everyone, managing to score 4 more goals. Unfortunately it was not enough, as the final score was 8-6 to Cransley. It was a great experience and we have learnt a lot from it!

On the 5th October, we played Bishops Heber. We won 9-1!
We played 4 quarters, but Heber had an A and a B team, so we ended up playing each team for two quarters of the game!
After the first game, we were winning 3-1. The first game was harder because it was Bishop Heber’s A team, but we still won! And after the second game, against their B team, the score was 9-1! We played really well and had a lot of fun, even though we were a bit tired after the Sponsored Walk!
By Millie Evans and Tilly Kilner (who won the man (or woman) of the match for both games!)
After a long walk in the beautiful countryside, we arrived back in the grounds of Abbey Gate and hopped straight on the bus to Bishops Heber. Once we arrived, we warmed up quickly and started our game with some strong play, taking the lead 7-1. We made a few positional changes and carried on working hard to maintain our lead, with some excellent shots on goal, fantastic defence and some great centre court work. With a minor collision of two of our own players, we were forced to change our strong defence line up, but managed to continue shooting goals, winning the game 19-8.

The Year 9’s and 10’s played an extremely competitive home game against Bishops Heber last night, with some great performances from the girls.
The Year 9’s started slowly, with Heber winning the first quarter 6-2. In the second quarter, Abbey Gate lifted their game, scoring 2 goals whilst preventing Heber scoring at all. The third quarter they were tied, but in the fourth quarter, Heber managed to score the last goal making the final score 11-10 to Heber.
Meanwhile the Year 10’s drew their first quarter 4-all but Abbey Gate allowed the visitors to score 7 goals in the second quarter to their 1 goal. With a lot to do in the second half, the College managed to stem the opposition’s goal scoring to 3 goals, but did not manage to convert any for themselves. The final quarter was much better with Abbey Gate scoring 3 more goals to Heber’s 2, making the final score 16-8 to Heber. This goal difference does not in fact reflect the closeness of the match play.
A very good effort from all involved, well done!

The Netball Season started strongly with excellent performances from the Year 7 and 8 teams in their first match of the year. Whether it was the ‘home game’ advantage or just sheer talent, the teams showed great promise in the first few minutes of the game.
The Year 8’s quickly showed the visitors who was in charge, taking control of the game early by keeping the ball in their attacking half for almost the entire quarter. At half time, Queens Park High were fighting back on the Year 8 court, drawing level for some time, until the talents of our shooters, Clea Edelman and Amy Williams began to take effect. The game was very tense, and at one point it was goal for goal, but by the final whistle, Abbey Gate’s Year 8’s were ahead by one goal. Final score: 9 – 8.
The Year 7’s also took an early lead, showing great team work and determination, converting their goals at nearly every opportunity. For their first game together, they played as though they had been playing as a team for years. It was clear from the start that they were not going to settle for anything less than a win and continued to use their experience and skill to defeat the visitors 24 – 3.
Amazing effort girls, well done!
