Evacuation Day
As part of the English and History curriculum at Aldford School, Junior Department of Abbey Gate College, pupils from J6 came to school dressed as World War Two evacuees. They have been reading Goodnight Mr Tom, a moving historical novel about this period in history.
To create a fuller understanding of how it may have felt to be evacuated, the day was planned to enable the children to experience a mock evacuation and meet an actual evacuee, who was evacuated to Canada during the war. She was able to come and meet the class to describe her experiences. Many children also brought in wartime memorabilia. We looked at a soldier’s war record, uniform, books and toys. Photographs were taken within the beautiful setting of Aldford Village.
The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children.
The Chapel Choir led Evensong at the Abbey to over 600 visitors every evening.
