All Design and Technology lessons are taught in our recently purpose built Design and Technology workshop. The workshop is an extremely well equipped, modern teaching space.
It contains a variety of equipment allowing students to develop traditional making skills alongside modern computer aided design and manufacturing techniques.
All students in KS3 are taught in a carousel arrangement, rotating in 12 week blocks through Design and Technology, Home Economics and Textiles.
Students begin by developing basic safe working skills while designing and making a ‘springy thingy’ toy similar to the common place woodpecker spring toy. An example of Year 7 work is shown.
In Year 8 students work with acrylic, a more demanding material and also begin to develop computer aided design (CAD) skills whilst continuing to improve their skills with traditional tools. In this project the students currently design and make an acrylic photo frame.
Year 9 students are asked to consider the needs of others by designing and making a clock for a specific client. The students develop a specification and select materials from those available in the workshop and are asked to accurately prototype the clock prior to manufacture. Once again a combination of traditional and computer aided techniques are used dependent on the project.
Students have may continue studying Design and Technology to GCSE and A level as part of the usual options process if they wish.
