The Department is based in Rooms 1, 2, 4 and Cottage 2. Lessons for Drama and Theatre Studies take place in the Theatre.
English is usually taught in groups set according to ability; this enables students to learn at their own pace, with the appropriate challenge and support. The aim of the English Department is to develop confident independent learners, who are able to communicate clearly. The opportunity for boys and girls to learn together is particularly important to us; we believe that there is benefit to both genders in the exchange of views and values.
Our students are encouraged to read widely and to develop a love of literature through sampling a variety of class readers and library books. Students practise a wide range of writing tasks, many of which appeal strongly to their imagination and sense of humour; the basic skills of grammar, spelling, punctuation and essay writing form an integral part of our teaching programme. The small numbers and generally high motivation of the students make oral work and group work productive and enjoyable ways of studying; we find that our students thrive on the lively and enthusiastic exchange of ideas as well as responding to our high expectations.
We aim for each year group to experience live performance (drama/poetry) at least once during the school year; this may take the form of a visit to the theatre or a workshop by a visiting theatre company. At GCSE it is usual for students to also have a session with an examiner as part of their preparations.
The English Department aims to enable students to achieve their full potential, at whatever level. We strive to make provision for those who are able and talented as well as those with specific learning difficulties. Regular lunch-time sessions are available providing extension activities as well as support.
All pupils in years 5, 6, 7 and 8 study spoken English/communication skills and prepare a presentation with visual aids on a chosen topic, learn a short piece of prose, poetry or acting, and read a passage from a favourite book; this encourages clear oral communication, appreciation of poetry and skills in reading, and also attentive listening and discussion. In the summer term they are examined in small groups by an examiner from the English Speaking Board. Preparing for the examination provides students with an oral confidence and skills which they use in GCSE English.
Drama is studied by all students in Key Stage Three (Years 7-9) and is a popular choice at GCSE. The school also offers Theatre Studies to AS & A Level.
In Drama students are introduced to a variety of theatrical methods and genres. They are encouraged to explore their individuality and improve their confidence in performance. Students learn techniques such as mime, freeze-frame, tableau, blocking and use of levels; they are able to improve their voice, gesture, movement, posture and facial expression to meet the needs of character. Interacting in groups heightens students’ sense of audience and purpose and develops an appreciation of their own and the work of others. Students also get an opportunity to see the effects of lighting, sound, costume and makeup. The school organises many theatre trips for all ages to broaden students’ knowledge and understanding of the theatre and performance.
Speech and Drama tuition is offered throughout the school as an extra-curricular activity. Pupils have weekly lessons in small groups. They are able to develop skills in all aspect of vocal communication including reading aloud, poetry speaking and public speaking and also acting, mime and improvisation. Students are provided with a range of experiences which will equip them with the skills and confidence to present themselves in any situation. Pupils can participate in festivals throughout the area and enter examinations in any aspect of Speech and Drama.
